Thanks Brenda. I was going through my photo's and found this one and thought might as well use it for the monthly theme LOL. This month's theme is hard to think of things that are a little bit "DIFFERENT". It WAS REAL YUMMY hehehehehehe #4240149Chris Ebben May 02, 2007
Looks pretty tasty to me. Good work thinking up something different=^..^= #4240276Nancy (Peaches) Harker May 02, 2007
Thank you Chris. Have a GREAT night #4240293Carol Teal May 02, 2007
What time is dinner Peaches? I love shrimp! Only thing...where are the hushpuppies? LOL Creative idea Peaches! Good thing I just ate or I would be hunting something up. #4240435Nancy (Peaches) Harker May 02, 2007
Thank you Carol. I have never had a hushpuppie LOL, I don't even think I know what one is. Shrimp is one of my favorites. #4240449Carol Teal May 02, 2007
LOL I can't believe you don't have hushpuppies where you are! They are sort of similar to cornbread, but round and usually have chopped onions in them and they are deep-fried! In the South, all fried fish and seafood are served with hushpuppies! And with catfish, many Southerners eat cheese grits too! And of course, a big glass of sweet tea! #4240621Nancy (Peaches) Harker May 02, 2007
I have heard of them, I am sure they have them somewhere. I have never been asked if I wanted them with Shrimp LOl, usually fries only. I don't go out and eat much so probably LOTS out there I have never had. Never had grits either LMAO #4240847Chris Ebben May 02, 2007
Over here Hushpuppies are shoes!! And we mostly would drink beer with fish 'n' chips... soft drinks for the kids!!! We don't have grits either=^..^= #4240924Nancy (Peaches) Harker May 02, 2007
LMAO Chris, that's the first thing I thought of was hushpuppy shoes with the little puppy.Chris Ebben May 02, 2007
You have fish 'n' chips & MILK??? #4240938Nancy (Peaches) Harker May 02, 2007
LMAO Yes, I ALWAYS drnk milk. It does the body goooooooooooood lol #4240941Carol Teal May 02, 2007
Hmmm..not sure exactly what grits are..I think they are a corn product, but they are little grains like rice until you cook them and then they plump up but not as much as rice. Some people like grits with eggs and some people put sugar on their grits. But I never cared for them for breakfast, but when I was in Tallahassee, my neighbor had a fish fry, and I ate cheese grits for the first time and liked them. Did you not ever watch Mels' Diner? There was a waitress on there named Flo (if my memory is correct) and her saying was "Kiss my grits!" And Chris, where is "over here"? I know about hushpuppy shoes, but Southerners think of the other kind of hushpuppy when we hear that word! Some seafood/fish restaurants serve hushpuppies as kind of an appetizer for you to nibble on til the real food gets here! #4240954Carol Teal May 02, 2007
Ok, here is something about grits:There is no such thing as a 'Grit Tree'. Southerners like to hide a smile when a Northern friend wants to know where grits grow.
Grits are coarsely ground corn or hominy cooked as a cereal or a side dish to the Southern breakfast of Eggs, Bacon or Country Ham, Red-Eye Gravy and Biscuits.
This comes from the website: http://home.att.net/~ejlinton/grits.html
It gives a recipe for garlic cheese grits, which sounds good, but I have never used garlic in mine. And don't ask me what red-eye gravy is because I haven't had that! :) #4240963

Chris is from NSW, AustraliaCarol Teal May 02, 2007
Very strange..maybe you were lost and not really in N.C. I thought cheeseburgers were known everywhere, and ketchup is used a lot around here! :) #4240973Chris Ebben May 02, 2007
Now you'll have us all cooking as well as taking pictures!!! Garlic & cheese corn cakes you say, sounds ok to me but still not with milk.Nancy (Peaches) Harker May 02, 2007
Red Eye GravyAccording to legend and not necessarily facts, Andrew Jackson (1767-1845), 7th President of the United States, who was an American General at the time, called his cook over to tell him what to prepare. The cook had been drinking "moonshine" corn whiskey the night before and his eyes were as red as fire. General Jackson told the cook to bring him some country ham with gravy as red as his eyes. Some men nearby heard the general and from then on, ham gravy became "Red Eye Gravy."

COUNTRY HAM AND RED-EYE GRAVYCountry Ham is a classic in Kentucky. The term "red-eye" supposedly comes from the little red circles or "eyes" of grease that form in the gravy on the plate.
Vegetable oil
8 slices (1/4-inch thickness) raw country ham
3/4 c. black coffee
1 tsp. granulated sugar
Heat a few drops of oil in a large skillet until skillet is medium hot. Lay ham slices in skillet. Cook on one side for 8 minutes over medium-high heat. Turn slices and fry 8 minutes more. Pour coffee into skillet with ham slices. Sprinkle with sugar and stir. Cover and let simmer over very low heat for 5 to 10 minutes. Serve ham and red-eye gravy together. 8 to 10 servings.

NOW, I can tell you, I would not like the red eye gravy, I can't stand coffee, nor the smell of it. I'll take the ham though! WITH MILK LOL #4240982Carol Teal May 02, 2007
Chris, "Over here" is Australia? I thought it was "Down Under" :) And Flo came on in Australia? Wow! And I was wrong on the name of the show; it was called "Alice" but Alice and Flo worked at Mel's. And thanks for that info Peaches! I hate ham, so I don't think I would like the gravy! #4240983Nancy (Peaches) Harker May 02, 2007
LMAO LMAO Cracking up here girls, VERY VERY FUNNY Carol. Your welcome.Chris Ebben May 02, 2007
What a pity I'm going out all over the week-end!! With you pair not liking everything & Dianna being a vegetarian, we'll have to do with Brenda's muffins!!!! At least I guess you could serve milk with them=^..^= #4241003Nancy (Peaches) Harker May 02, 2007
Can't leave out Susan's Candy, chocolate nuggets!Carol Teal May 02, 2007
Mmmmm, muffins are good...I can handle that! But no milk! I hate milk too! And "eyes" of grease in the gravy! That should be very heart healthy! Yuck! #4241014Nancy (Peaches) Harker May 02, 2007
Girls, we could never ALL get together and have a party. LOL #4241017Carol Teal May 02, 2007
Yes we could..just put on the invitation "BYOF". That stands for "Bring your own food!" LOL (You know, like BYOB) #4241019Chris Ebben May 02, 2007
Does BYOB stand for "Bring your own Booze" or "Bring your own Bloke"?I reckon we'd have a good time together, we'd get lots of pictures=^..^= #4241029
Nancy (Peaches) Harker May 02, 2007
It took me a while to figure it out, my guess is bring your own booze. I don't know what Bloke is?Chris Ebben May 02, 2007
We use just write BYO "Bring you own" meaning drinks/grog/booze but in the new times where you are often asked to bring food the list has changed.Nancy (Peaches) Harker May 02, 2007
What is Bloke? Is grog beer? #4241039Chris Ebben May 02, 2007
Grog is any alcohol & Blokes are men & women are Sheilas (though this is not used that often now, not politically correct I guess). #4241043Nancy (Peaches) Harker May 02, 2007
LMAO Chris. Don't know what to say. I know what a Sheilas is. I heard that from the movie Crocodile Dundee LOL.Chris Ebben May 03, 2007
Well I had better let you get to bed & I'll start getting the fish 'n' chips (& beer) ready for dinner. Good one said the cats=^..^= #4241063Nancy (Peaches) Harker May 03, 2007
