What lens did you use for this shot Scott?? I've always wanted to do the races but the biggest lens I have is 300mm...even with a 1.6x I thought it may have been too short. so that's why I'd like to know what lens you used.

This shot was at Bathurst last year and I had a Pentax SFX (SF1) body coupled with a 100 - 300mm sigma lens. It was a cheap alternative lens that was only any good in really bright light as it was quite slow.

I have since swapped over to a Cannon EOS33, and besides the standard lens, have a 75-300mm USM lens. I also pinched a 2X converter that my sister had lying around, so it will be interesting to see how that goes. I haven't been able to get to a race meeting to try it out yet, but I can't wait. I have found the 300mm lens OK so far, but I have managed to get a couple of press passes to get that bit closer.

It's not a silly question and no I'm not press, although I would love to be. To get a press pass I had to do a heap of ringing around various newspapers and magazines and ask the photo editors if they would look at my photo's. Most said no outright, but some said they would have a look if I got something out of the ordinary, like a crash or something. The problem we have is that most newspapers and magazines have staff photographers so why would they pay for our shots if they already pay someone else.

Once you can get someone to say they will have a look, you have to get it in writing and then approach the event organisers or management groups. Then pray, because it is super competitive as you can see from the number of pro photographers at each event.

To get closer to the action I would suggest that you don't go on race day. Go to the earliest available pratice session. The flag marshalls arn't as stressed early on and they are more likely to be sweet talked into letting you jump the fence for a couple of shots. Just don't over stay your welcome and do exactly as they say. Then you can go to the race and watch it if you want.
