Thoughts on the Making of this Image

At my little ranch in California, we have a collection of birdhouses. From time to time, I like to photograph them. On this day, it looked like a fine sunset in the works ... and I wasn't disappointed!

As an FYI: I planned to shoot the scene as a silhouette - i.e., with the subjects in shadow, while facing the bright sky. I then set things up well before the colors began ... i.e., planning my composition, in terms of camera angle and focal length. I shot a few images of other ranch subjects, then returned when the light was getting good. Because of my advance "scouting", I was able to compose the picture quickly - on a tripod, of course. :-)

To get the correct exposure, I took an exposure reading directly off the medium-toned areas of the sky (not the darkest, not the lightest). I then locked in those settings, re-composed my picture, and fired away. The result was good color in the sky and appropriate blackness (silhouettes) for the shadowed subjects. #3881146
