I'm reminiscing after seeing this one! There is one lake that we started camping at as a family when I was a girl, and there are always Steller's Jays there. My Dad befriended one of them one year. He had been badly pecked by the other birds, and was injured and couldn't fly well. So my Dad set out a place just for him close to the campsite where he could come to feed by himself (the other birds were to frightened to come so close). My Dad named him Little Scruff. By the end of summer, Little Scruff was doing really well. Sure enough, at the start of camping the next year, Little Scruff came back, and he was still doing really well. After that summer, my Dad became ill, and we didn't go back to that lake for a couple of years. We never saw Little Scruff again. Dad has since passed away, but what memories this photo brings back! Beautiful work, Janine!
