The Saint

Description

I took this image just an hour ago. I went out and saw this termendous and unusual size halo around the moon. Grabbed the camera, jumped on my bike and rushed to a nearby church where I knew this statue was. I had to lie down prostrate on the pavement to be able to point the camera almost straithg up. (If anyone saw me doing that, they might have thought I was an orthodox catholic or something).

I love your pic first of all and your quick thinking to get it in the first place.
I always love the totally creative shots that I get in the craziest of positions to get...more so the looks of those around.
It's my understanding that the ring around the moon happens before a significant weather change. The truth or science to that I do not know. #3663432

Hello Allen, Colette, Chris, Brenda, and Rhonda,

Thank you so much for your compliments, I really appreciate your comments.

From my understanding, this phenomenon is a result of light refraction in tiny droplets of water on the hazy sky.
Similarly to a rainbow, which would appear as a circle when looked at from an airplane. The difference is that the refraction angle is much lower and the light does not get reflected inside the droplets - that's why we do not see colors. However, I may be wrong ;).

The photo is a winner in my book - love the title and your determination in taking it! Sometimes we're just at the right place at the right time! Very creative to think to put the ring around the moon around the statute's head! #3668082
