Congratulations on being a finalist and good luck in the next round #469240

Thanks, Daniel! Apparently I got a bit confused in May, and uploaded a "new" copy of this, despite having an existing thread on the original photo!

Great shot Chris! The only suggestion I would make would be to rotate it slightly to straighten out the horizon.

Darleen A. Stry 3/6/2006 5:53:01 AM
Chris this an absoluted gorgeous shot.
Whenever I rotate nowadays I use free transform with a grid. That helps me keep the same image size (because I can stretch the image to cover the white areas caused by rotating).

Christopher J. Budny 3/6/2006 7:08:48 AM
Thanks folks...! I usually "see" any tilt immediately, but I've been studying this now really hard, and can only make out maybe a pixel or 2 difference, when looking at the lamp post bases, on the left side compared to the right. (I think the right wing of the Capitol, being recessed from the rest of the building, lends to the "effect.") Very subtle, indeed!

Michelle R. Kovach 3/6/2006 12:41:42 PM
Its not so much that Chris as it is that the left side of the image is slightliy higher & I think the line of bricks off to the right of the statue is helping the effect even worse.

Christopher J. Budny 3/6/2006 4:30:50 PM
Ok, using the grid in PSE, I did a very slight rotation left, to get windowsills and roof lines, etc., to fall evenly on the grid... It is VERY slight, however, but does now officially align with the grid. Do you see a difference? Thanks!

Stan Lubach 3/6/2006 5:13:37 PM
Excellent detail, Christopher. Great work on the exposure.

Michelle R. Kovach 3/6/2006 5:42:28 PM
Much better Chris!

Christopher J. Budny 3/6/2006 5:54:41 PM
Amazing; I used just 0.1 degree rotation to the left!!

Christopher J. Budny 3/6/2006 5:55:12 PM
Many thanks, Stan!

Darleen A. Stry 3/7/2006 10:31:39 AM
Much better.

Lonnie M. Honeycutt 3/8/2006 11:13:31 AM
Fantastic exposure! I was really expecting to see a shutter time of at least 5 seconds. You were really lucky with the angle the light was hitting the building at. Great shot.

Christopher J. Budny
Thanks so much, Lonnie! I hung out in that location for probably 45 minutes, just to watch the effect of nearly the whole sunset. (There were ducks, gulls, and the Washington Monument to shoot, as well!) I can't remember if I had the circular polarizer on this shot or not, either. #2926374

Great shot Christopher - I agree with you about the recessed wall lending to the effect - I think the original looks great!

Thank you, Shawn!

Awesome image, Christopher!!! I'm really quite envious of this one! Great capture!

Christopher J. Budny 4/16/2006 8:04:11 AM
Thanks so much, Sharon! Wish I could say I planned it that way, but I was pleasantly surprised to see the effect on the windows; I was just interested in capturing some evening shots, and hadn't expected that. Glad I was there, tripod handy!

Christopher, This is an excellent shot. Great lighting and your care in choosing position & alignment of the camera for this shot make for a very pleasing composition. I see you've got quite a fine collection of D.C. area shots in your portfolio. #3388687

Thanks, Tom! I didn't expect the sunset would have that effect on all the windows; I was so glad I stuck around to see it!
Living just over the Potomac in Arlington, VA, gives me plenty of DC access for photo shoots! #3389579
