Bell at Smolny

Uploaded: January 30, 2018 | Entered: January 30, 2018 14:52:43

Description

When the Soviets came to power in Russia they had all the bells removed from churches and Cathedrals, smelted and used as weapons as a part of their removing religion from the Soviet. This and many bells were saved and hidden until the Soviet Union collapsed and this was the first bell returned and placed at the Smolny. Today under Putin the Orthodox Russian Church and other religions are free to practice and he has allocated a lot of rubles to their reconstruction and renovation.

It was such a joy to read your description and informative. You brought to light what was going on and how it is now. Add to that, the beautiful picture of the bell. The details of it and the colors and design of the church in the background are beautifully captured. You are having one spectacular series from your trip and filling your gallery with such beautiful works Emile. #11674413
