Green Man (of the Sea)

Uploaded: August 07, 2017 | Entered: August 07, 2017 16:15:30

Description

Continuing what has turned into quite a streak of monotone images for me, a detail here of a niche's scalloped cap, at the Library of Congress. This struck me as some sort of sea god (there's an enormous bronze fountain of Neptune and his court, in front of the Library) - and the niche opposite this one has a female face carved, also adorned with seashells. It reminded me of the gothic "green man" carvings that often contain a man's face growing leaves and foliage; except sea-based, here. B/W conversion from color, strong contrast and vignette, as well as edge burning and a bit of glow on the face.
