Little Egret

A species of small heron frequently found along the canals in Venice; in Italy they're called garzetta. This one was perched on a gondola mooring post in a canal when I spotted it while crossing a bridge. It was only once I was reviewing the photos that I noticed the 1 leg stance. PG101 Wildlife Theme

This is a very wonderful composition, Chris... excellent clarity (wow on the feathers), and the one-legged stance inspired some Google research. The soft grey and winter-white tints in this image are very appealing to the eye. #11570299Chris Budny March 10, 2017 1
Thank you both! Joanna, I really liked the blurred out canal surface reflects as an 'abstract' background here. I googled on the 1-leg stand, and modified my caption accordingly - thanks! #11570313Bob Cournoyer March 10, 2017
Sharp, great dof, and the head feather... :-)Amanda D. Austwick March 10, 2017

Very pleasing handling of the detail in the white and the background softness. #11570401Michele Peterson March 10, 2017
Just wow. Incredible pose, detail, and overall image, Chris. That soft background does add nicely to this wonderful portrait! #11570571Terry A. Stoa March 11, 2017
This bird is so intense... focused on its next snack, I suppose. Fine detail on its body, feathers, feet and more... the blurred background adds to the egret's intensity. #11570665Chris Budny March 11, 2017
Thanks, Mitch, Michele & Terry. This bird was quite content to sit still for me for many, many shots, as I got closer... I suspect in Venice they're quite unperturbed by pedestrians. #11570786Terry A. Stoa April 06, 2017
My March 2017 favorite of yours, Chris. #11580547Chris Budny April 07, 2017
Thanks a lot, Terry! It certainly was a very accommodating heron, content to let me take many photos, fairly close by. #11580796Sign up for an interactive online photography course to get critiques on your photos.
