Description

As you can see the black background is not very dark. I think my flash unit light went on it. Shot at f/5.6 @ 1/200

You could choose to put the background further away, shoot with a lower ambient light (if the room light is low, the background will be darker but the flash will still light your subject, or use a more light-absorbent material like velvet; you could combine all these ideas and you couls shoot with a larger aperture to reduce your depth of field.
Or you could post-process: this example took 30 seconds in Photoplus (like Paintshop) _ a second layer was added, filled with black and then the background of the original was erased...voila! #348591
