It is the mating season for the Monarch. There are several areas in California where they migrate. This photo was taken at Pacific Grove Ca. near Monterey.

Beautiful composition. I've been to the Monarch groves at Pacific Grove and Morro Bay, CA, but haven't even seen commercial post cards as good as this. After seeing it I said....Oh, it's the blue background that highlights the orange of the Monarch's winds.

Jeanette, believe it or not, our state "bug" (TX) is the monarch butterfly. For the life of me, I can't recall what month it is when they converge upon our area on their way to warmer climates--Mexico I think--I believe it must happen in October. It only lasts one day, and the sky is full of them. I haven't been lucky enough to see a cluster like this yet. I will have to stay alert next fall. Great shot. #5026
