Wings Upside Down?

Uploaded: July 21, 2013

Description

Art of the Barn: Audubon Bucks Cty Barn Tour 2013
----
I have never seen a butterfly whose wings' UNDERSIDE was more vibrant and beautiful than the top side. Until NOW!
----
When this swallowtail rested on a flower, wings outspread, they were dull and unremarkable. But with his wings UP like in this photo, you can see how magnificent its folded wings would be.
-----
Could they have been "sewn on" upside down?
------
Photo made in one of the gardens at Barn #5 Tammany Farm, dated 1741.

Excellent close-up, Michelle...It's a spicebush swallowtail and you're right - fully opened, from the top view, its wings aren't much to look at but the hind wings, when displayed in a "closed" position are amazingly colorful and beautiful...which your capture portrays perfectly. Unique position you caught this fellow in, as well as, excellent clarity and color. Great observation on your part (as always) - and capture! #10775558

Cool perspective, Michelle - just saw one of these on a pile of rocks in West Virginia. Never did get him to keep his wings up so the spots showed, though. Well done! #10775575
