I like your framing (and I love the arch coffers I can see) but I think the archway and the trees are just way, way too underexposed. (I'm assuming, based on exposing for the bright sky and included sun?) Is there enough detail in the shadows, to pull some up? I'd kind of like to see the sunlit stone be brighter, and then the dark, shaded stone to be about the brightness of the (current) sunlit stone. If that makes sense? #1499019Michael Kelly November 18, 2012
Yes to what Chris said. I also find that the area of dark is just too much and agree and understand his suggestions. #10424459Jeff E Jensen November 18, 2012
Good call on the shadows, Chris and Mike. Here's a new version. #10424473Teresa H. Hunt November 18, 2012
Oh I like this much better with the shadows opened up. #10424610Rita K. Connell November 18, 2012
just what it needed....I really like your Jeff angle on this of course...really cool shot #10424742Jeff E Jensen November 18, 2012
Thanks, ladies!Here's one more version. . . #10424772

I like edit 2 the very best! I like seeing the details in the arch.. #10424773Chris Budny November 19, 2012
Agreed, version 2 is better, I think... #10424974Peter W. Marks November 19, 2012
And I am with Edit 2 also; but be aware young Jeff that if I get curvature of the spine from looking at all your "leaning tower of Pisa" type shots, I will sue. #10425317Aimee C. Eisaman November 19, 2012
Another unique view of a well known place from you Jeff! :~) Your last post is the one I like best although I think the little prism cast could go that is on the shadows of the wall. It just draws way too much attention in my humble opinion. #10425908Jeff E Jensen November 19, 2012
Thanks, everyone!Peter - you wouldn't get much. . .
Aimee - I've been torn on that, couldn't decide if it should stay or go. Here it is gone. #10425945

No. 3 is better still--I was on the fence about that prism. However, in looking at all 3 again, I now think the overall shot is itself, underexposed for the stone... ie, even the now-brightened stone on the left side, doesn't feel/look right to me, for reflected lighting in sun-still-above-the horizon kind of light... it has the "dim" look of underexposed reflected light, if that makes sense? I feel like the whole scene needs to be exposed brighter (which would certainly blow out a bit more sun/sky, of course) to capture the arch properly lit in both the brights and the shadows... so perhaps I want this to be an HDR subject instead! ;) #10425960Aimee C. Eisaman November 19, 2012
I like it gone. :~) #10425991Jeff E Jensen November 19, 2012
Aimee - I agree, I prefer it gone.Chris - I can see what you are saying and I think you are right, it would be better with more detail. Unfortunately, this image started out most of 2 stops under exposed so I've pulled out of it what I can. I did try making 3 versions and then combining into an HDR image, but it wasn't good so I'm leaving it here. That being said, I do like this image with the final edits and we'll see how the judges feel about it.
Here's a different image with a completely different feel to it. #10426102

By the way, Peter, this is the National Memorial Arch in Valley Forge, PA. Now, off to Google you go. . . . . #10426120Peter W. Marks November 20, 2012
It is only 5.20am but I am off to Valley Forge. Thanks Jeff #10426338Debbie E. Payne November 22, 2012
Jeff - I like your last edit and so understand about just bringing out what you could when taking a severely underexposed shot. But we have to try, right? The group must be thinking about sunstars because I have one I took on the way up to the top of Pikes Peak yesterday. You may or may not see it, depending on how underexposed it is.I like your last one, too. It does have an entirely different feel to it! I look forward to Peter's FYI. #10429257

Ha Jeff! I always thought Valley Forge was a Revolutionary war battle but now I know differently. Google websites gives me the full history of it being just an 'over-wintering encampment' but about 2500 under George Washington died from starvation, and diseases.Debbra Bailey November 24, 2012
Love the final edit on this one Jeff! Just beautiful with that star :) #10432009Sign up for an interactive online photography course to get critiques on your photos.
