Congo African Grey Parrot
Psittacus erithacus erithacus
A medium-sized parrot found in the primary and secondary rainforest of West and Central Africa. Experts regard it as one of the most intelligent birds in the world. They feed primarily on palm nuts, seeds, fruits, and leafy matter, but have also been observed eating snails. Their overall gentle nature and their inclination and ability to mimic speech have made them popular pets, which has led many to be captured from the wild and sold into the pet trade. Texas animal lover, Cheryl Lampton, admires a magnificent six month old specimen at her favorite local pet store, "Out Of The Cage", that can already speak several phrases.

Now you've touched a place in my heart: Banshee! Banshee was our pet Grey...and special family member. She could have simple conversations with us: eg, "Take me for a ride" (if we left her large cage-on-wheels in a room by herself); "Can I have some?" (if we were preparing a meal), "Awwwww" (if she saw people kissing or cuddling). She would laugh her head off at sitcoms, scream "BAD BOY!" at our Norfolk Terrier, and beg for a kiss when the lights went off at night. She'd also dance along her perch to African Music. My heart breaks when I recall her tragic demise. Sigh. Won't ever keep a caged bird again... But they are magnificent! #10355188
