Wood Pecker Tech

Uploaded: June 21, 2012 12:43:08

I guess one would call this entire scene "low tech".. it's a simple old barbed wire fence with cedar posts. The ingenious wood peckers gather the oak acorns and place them in the holes they have pecked for their winter food storage and winter dining.

Terrific story-telling image!

Is that really true?
I've actually observed Red-headed Woodpeckers stashing live grasshoppers into dead crags to be consumed later, so I guess it's safe to assume that stashing acorns falls within another pecker species typical behavioral pattern.

Thanks for sharing.

Thank you.. yes it's true. Every cedar post along this road is pecked with holes and filled with acorns.

That's pretty cool!

I'd love to some day get a photo of the birds actually stashing the nuts.
