Thanks Dominick and Jack.Pileated WP's are really huge! They are the largest known species of woodpecker in the U.S.
It's been said that their pounding upon the trees can be heard for miles...sounding as if a hammer were striking wood.
The species is also considered very skittish and difficult to photograph at close range. I was fortunate that day to be out in the driveway washing my car when this handsome male Pileated swooped over my head and came to rest in my neighbor's yard to snag a little spillage from his feeder.
My soapy sponge and garden hose were quickly replaced by my camera and a medium telephoto for this one shot.
..after which the big woodpecker disappeared for parts unknown.
