Watching the Sunset, Hand in Hand

Uploaded: April 16, 2012 18:47:24

Description

Sunset on South Maui. The sky is hazy due to cane fires earlier in the day. There are more ecological ways to harvest sugar cane, but HC&S insists on torching the cane fields to remove the outer plant material. This makes for smoggy beach conditions during the day more akin to LA than most people's ideas of a tropical paradise. It does make for pretty sunsets though. Taken in October 2008.

What a beautiful tropical sunset, Martha, and I love your title!
Cane is not burned much here anymore, amongst other thing it reduces the yield of sugar per acre!

Thanks everyone!

John -- that's interesting that the burning process isn't even efficient! I do hope they change the harvesting practices on Maui someday, too. #10096263
