Converging Light

Uploaded: January 06, 2012

Description

Thirty five minutes after photographing yesterday’s photo, Sunrise Over Pistol River, I walked out on a trail at Cape Sebastian that has sweeping views of the rugged coastline to the north. The patchy, coast-hugging fog and clouds in the morning light were magical, but what really caught my eye was something I don’t recall ever seeing before: Anticrepuscular rays! They are visible in the upper left quadrant. Instead of radiating out from the sun like crepuscular waves, these appear to converge in the opposite direction as the sun. This convergence is an illusion, similar to how railroad tracks will appear to converge in the distance, when they are actually parallel.

Quote of the Day: “May the sun in his course visit no land more free, more happy, more lovely, than this our own country” ~Daniel Webster
