Rita, this one is a beauty!! Very menacing and perfectly camouflaged. His head is almost invisible in front of his body.

You could still keep that look while bringing out his head a bit more. Try duplicating the image and apply about 50% multiply blend. Then erase the effect from the head only and apply high pass filter to the head only as well.

Have to assume this is a zoo capture 'cause I can't see you getting that close in the wild. LOL

Oh wow! That is way to close for me . . . even if it was through glass.

I think this shot is great just the way it is. His eye is in perfect focus and the DOF is great.

I'm curious to see Dale's suggestions . . . #9143507

Rita awesome shot thru glass. This isn't something you could get without a really nice telephoto otherwise. I really like the DOF and the comp. is nice as well. Will be curious to see Dales suggestions. This would also look neat as a pano if you are interested! :~) #9143975

Wow, Rita this is wonderful.
You done a great job with the composition and kudos for the through the glass shot. I took a few images like this about 3 weeks ago and was disappointed, planning a re-shoot this week with a different lens. What lens did you use? Yours image is great. I like the DOF and your focus. Curious to see Dale's editing suggestions.

Great focus and DOF Rita...I am joining the "curious to see Dale's suggestions" club too...I think that could actually be a spinoff club from the phellos since we all say that after every critique he writes! #9144217

Joan E. Hoffman January 05, 2011

ROFL @ Tony's suggestion of a spin off club! However, I think we want to keep Dale all to ourselves!!

Rita... one one the neatest snake shots I have ever seen! Wonderfully done! I actually really like snakes... (as long as they are safely behind glass!!!!!) #9144884

reptile house is always fun to go into at the zoo. and Dale you are so right at not getting this close. This beauty was really close to the glass with my suction cup on the end of my lens ( after wiping the window off of course) he just laid their keeping and eye on me.
thanks teresa, carla, tony and Joan and you are so right we do all say that and I'm with Joan we want to keep him all to ourselves...
ok dale I did your suggestion dotted the i's and cross the T's...LOL
and aimee I cropped as you suggested #9144895

carla I sorry I forgot to say what lens I used my nikon 18 to 200mm on this one I usually take that one and my 300mm with me to the zoo. that usually covers all my wants. #9144905

Dale Hardin January 05, 2011

LOL. Rita, I think I like your version better than mine. A bit dark even though the head is the same. Hmmm. #9145063

18 to 200 .... I am totally envious... I ALWAYS have the wrong lens for the occasion. I want an 18 to 12 million zillion LOL #9145083

How in heck did I do that one twice #9145087

Joan - I am SO GLAD to know that I am in good company because that is a mistake that I make occasionally. Generally, at night when I am tired...

And Rita - I think I like your original best. Shooting through glass is a real challenge for me. He is very cool. #9145122

Beth Spencer January 05, 2011

I have to agree that this is way too close for me but an awesome shot!!
I am curious as to what kind of suction cup you use on the end of the lens. #9145242

Teresa H. Hunt January 05, 2011

I love what the edits did! I think I favor the original crop over the pano one. :) #9145436

Aimee C. Eisaman January 06, 2011

Thanks for try my crop idea, but I too like the original one best! :~) Also like the original over Dales suggestions. #9146064

Carla Capra Anderson January 06, 2011

Hi Rita,
All the suggestions give this image a different look. Each illustrating good qualities. My personal preference is the very well done original.
