Gutter Guardian
Uploaded: January 04, 2011 04:30:29
When you take my "Behind The Scenes" tour at the cathedral, one of our stops is actually the gutter! They're big enough to walk in, as you can see.
The pinnacles, buttresses, and gablets all over the cathedral are adorned with hundreds of 'grotesques', often carved as heads of animals,
people, or imaginary creatures. They're among the many fine details making up the visual richness of gothic architecture;
often, grotesques serve to deflect channeled rainwater, unlike gargoyles which actually spout excess water from their mouths!

Wonderful perspective, Chris, and I love the textures. That gargoyle is close enough to touch -- though I imagine you discourage that among members of your tour groups. The neutral tones are lovely, too, and allow for full appreciation of the intricate architectural details you have given us a glimpse of. #1341156Dr Silly January 04, 2011

What a perfect composition. The gargoyle is perfectly placed on the rh side and seems to be guarding over the wonderful details of the cathedral. Nice job of swapping the sky. Could be a winner! #9142211Michele Peterson January 04, 2011
I'm going to have to take one of your tours... if I ever get there! This is a fabulous shot. Incredible details, wow, and yes, the monotone color of it brings more attention to the detail and texture. #9142920Patti Coblentz January 04, 2011

Thanks so much, folks! If you're ever in DC for a visit, let me know and we'll see if we can arrange a Behind the Scenes tour for you! If not that (it is a limited-offering tour) then certainly an in-depth regular tour! #9143844Jane Holestine January 05, 2011
