Another shot from the Sandhill Crane fall migration at Indiana's Jasper Pulaski Fish & Wildlife Refuge. The cranes feed in the surrounding farmland but as evening approaches they return to congregate at the Refuge. As the density roosting cranes increases, returning birds must carefully pick their landing site. Taken 11/16/10 around 5:00 p.m.

I was just told something beautifully sad about these special birds. That they mate for life and when one dies the other roams around life very lost. Sometimes they will just stay there beside their mate that has passed away and not leave. Have you head this, too?

Breaks a persons heart yet beautiful at the same time.

Love this image, Rona. :)

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU!

Thank you Debby and Laura for stopping by. Laura, I knew that cranes mate for life, but I had absolutely no idea about the rest of it - how very sad, but beautiful and moving, too. Seeing this spectacle, and hearing it (the sounds are awesome and can be heard for miles)and watching them socializing, I can believe it, however. #9122487

I think I mentioned this before: your setting for the cranes is so much more beautiful than ours. Their migration spot through California is in a flat expansive area with no trees. You certainly captured a large group beautifully! #9123900

I bet if we were crane experts we could tell which ones are more lonely. Maybe the ones just sitting down being silent? :(

Anyway just wanted to pass on what I had learned.

HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO YOU. xo #9124029

Rona, fabulous shot, the light is absolutely gorgeous. I was at a shoot at a farm near my home here in Georgia the other day and we had two Snow Geese hanging around the pond. Highly unusual for us here in GA....but maybe it was a sign to come as we had snow last night on Christmas evening! #9125678
