Ariocarpus retusus (A plant rarely seen)
Uploaded: September 26, 2010
Ariocarpus retusus is a small grayish green cactus that barely appears above ground. Also called "living rocks". It is rare to flower. Their horny, fleshy, umbicated three angled tubercles are characteristic. It is also called "False Peyote" and contains psychoactive phenylethylamine alkaloids that are stronger than peyote. It was valued in witchcraft by the Tarahumara. It grows in the Canyon Lands of the Lower Pecos-Rio Grande and has been used for thousands of years as a hallucinogenic

What a gorgeous flower Emile, and your skill in capturing it is superb! It is amazing such a rough looking plant can have such a gorgeous flower! I have excluded it from my list of bush tucker foods! #1311875Kitty R. Rodehorst-Hanna September 26, 2010
