Killdeer always lay four camouflaged eggs with pointed tips in a bed of gravel,
the pointed tips keep the eggs from rolling away from the nest

Thank you, Jenny!! All the colors in the rocks are because it was a glacial field so there are lots of different types of stone in the gravel.
