Wild Turkey Hen, Wildlife Safari-Oregon

Uploaded: April 14, 2010

Description

Wildlife Safari, Winston Oregon
The wild turkey hen

Ben Franklin thought the North American wild turkey should be the national bird. The turkey of his day was nothing like the domesticated descendants we know today. The wild turkey of Ben Franklin's day was a brightly plumed, cunning bird of flight.

There was one hen here a few years back that was very tame. It was quite a sight to see her flying up to you at about 1000mph and still able to stop at your feet. More info in comments.

Wild Turkeys are surprisingly agile fliers and cunning, unlike their domestic counterparts. Turkeys are very cautious birds and will fly or run at the first sign of danger. Their ideal habitat is an open woodland or savanna, where they may fly beneath the canopy top and find perches. They usually fly close to the ground for no more than a quarter mile (400 m). Turkeys have many vocalizations: "gobbles," "clucks," "putts," "purrs," "yelps," "cutts," "whines," "cackles," and "kee-kees." In early spring, male turkeys, also called gobblers or toms, gobble to announce their presence to females and competing males. The gobble can carry for up to a mile. Males also emit a low-pitched "drumming" sound; produced by the movement of air in the air sack in the chest, similar to the booming of a prairie chicken. In addition they produce a sound known as the "spit" which is a sharp expulsion of air from this air sack. Hens "yelp" to let gobblers know their location. Gobblers often yelp in the manner of females, and hens can gobble, though they rarely do so. Immature males, called jakes, yelp often. #1258632

Love your thread on your animals Denny. I live in the middle of turkey country. In fact if you don't get a hair cut from the barber before hunting season you will have to wait until it is over. They can be very stealthy too, a flock can slip by you with out making a noise. Great capture in the natural habitat. #8534104

Thank you, Ron! We never had turkeys here until a few years ago. Now I hear then gobble quiet often. Our tame hen had a lot of little ones but only managed to raise one. Too many coyotes and bobcats and then they also disappeared. Think our neighbor had a turkey dinner..LOL.. #8534275

Thank you, Tammy! I think they got started by someone hatching wild eggs and turning them loose here. A check with the wildlife people said they did not turn any loose in our area. #8534412

Every time I see a turkey it brings back memories of that hilarious "WKRP in Cincinnati" episode with the Thanksgiving turkey toss from the airplane fiasco! Glad these guys and gals would have made the landing safely. Cool capture, Denny! #8534875

Fantastic capture of wildlife, Denny! The turkey is a remarkable bird; have you tried gobbling to them? I have found that if you imitate their gobbling, they will gobble back and come toward you...it's amazing! #8535914
