This Monarch Butterfly was unable to fly because of the lack of energy. Plus it was nightfall. You can be fooled by these butterflies. The Viceroy Butterfly has evolved to look like the poisonous Monarch so do you have a Monarch or Viceroy?

You have the Monarch. The Viceroy usually has a narrow black bar crossing the hindwings. #303046Robert Moore August 31, 2005 0
Thanks. They are so close I wasn't 100% sure. #1787265Barbara Helgason September 01, 2005 0
Great capture Robert, didn't know any butterflies could be poisonous! #1791204Robert Moore September 01, 2005 0
Yes, the Monarch is if eaten and the colors protect it also by giving a warning to its enemies. That's why the Viceroy adopted the look. #1791756Sign up for an interactive online photography course to get critiques on your photos.
