Little Dirty Birdie Feet
Uploaded: June 07, 2011
This immature Red Tailed Hawk fell from a nest in our back yard prematurely. My sons and I made an artifical nest out of a sawed-off milk crate, lashed it to a branch in a flowering crab tree near the nest tree (the nest he fell from is in an oak about 50 feet off the ground), and lined the crate with cedar boughs. After two days, the adults began bringing food to BOTH nests (one babe in each). A successful intervention.
He lets me get pretty close -
this one with me standing on a ladder using my Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM lens at 200mm - a slight crop from full frame.
Him on a branch above his milk crate.

"What big claws you have" is what I'm thinking! I just love how you thought of this artificial nest and how well it worked! Such a wonderful story! #9447692Jane Hirst July 03, 2011 0
