Description

Had a photo shoot with six (count them six) Grand children for a client. This was a workout and was fun doing it.

Sue, I love how you have them posed and how all of them have interesting expressions on their very cute faces! I'll bet you did have a workout with six kiddos! The only thing that I can possibly say about this is that to me, their faces are a bit bright, but I would definitely defer to those Phellos who are portrait photographers because I haven't got any experience in this part of photography and am probably wrong. #1445365

Awesome job to get a shot this good with 6 kids in it! I know from experience it can be tough to get a shot with ONE kid! I like the effect you applied but I agree with Deb that the faces seem a bit too bright. I also think the fact there is some loss of detail in the skin and features because of that makes for an odd contrast against their clothes and the bg, which both have more detail in them. #10000405

You obviously had to bribe one of them! In my experience, cousins are great and almost always a lot of fun. I think you captured that here. I like the way the older one's reach pulls them all together and serves as a strong compositional reinforcement.

I'm curious about the high key, as well. My thought was that you did this to increase the impact of a B&W version which might not otherwise hold one's attention. I might be a little overdone but it doesn't particularly detract to me. #10000415

Thanks guys and Stephen that is exactly why I did this. Sometimes B&W are hard to stand above color images. When I showed up at this house to do this shoot, out comes six, believe it or not, brothers and sisters, all dressed in miss matched colors. Right then I knew this shoot was going to turn out as a b&w priority. I do, as you all know by now, tend to lein toward over-exposure images. I just think they are more dramatic, that's my style. Here is one toned down a tad. #10000483

Excellant job with the posing and the faces Sue. I also like high key but this just doesn't work for me in either post. Would love to see the original image because I think you could get much better results with a different technique. #10000596

A very impressive capture! Was this just one shot or did you merge two or more photos? They are all looking at you and have great expressions. This right here is why I don't do family portraiture...I would have a major anxiety attack trying to deal with this many children! lol

As you may have guessed I like the brighter one over your edit. But I do think the brightness is making it a bit soft so maybe lay the edit over it and lower the opacity of it quite a bit. See what you think of that. :~) #10000943

nothing more challenging than a bunch of kid but at the same time nothing more fun...!! I agree they are to bright and I think aimee is on to something.

I agree with the others that the faces are too bright in the high key but I DO like it better than the plain BW. I'd like to see how Aimee's lower opacity suggestion works! #10001127

As I mentioned I'm a fan of high key but this version is all washed out and the contrast is gone. The background is especially distracting and would suggest if you leave it as is, at least crop to a pano and elliminate the background.

Please don't get me wrong, I think this is a very unique shot with all the kids and their expressions. I just feel it could be processed in a more flattering way. #10001226

Interesting responses to this one Sue. All agreed on the fun of having six of the little angels(!) in the image but widely differing thinking on high key or not high key. What we seem to be seeing here is hi key overdone and natural image just too ordinary. It is begging for a compromise says I. #10001543

I love the expressions on the kids faces, but I think the compromise would be interesting. It is amazing you could get that many kids in one spot looking like they are having a blast. I look forward to your edit. #10001860

I think it's a great portrait Sue. I am in the camp that believes high key works really well in limited situations. I think in this case it will work, but the posted shot is just a little overdone. I find I agree with Peter. A bit of compromise between the two posts, would be appropriate. From your description, I think the black and white treatment was a good idea and works well.

I just love the feel of this one as a family grouping. They all look like they're having so much fun, and the togetherness of family really comes across in this image.

Ok gang, I have been working hard on this one. I hope I am uploading the right ones because my head is turning and my eyes are seeing extra stuff I don't think should be there. Thanks for the diccussion here, it gave me alot to think about and play with. I took Aimees Idea and blended the two images and Anthony's thoughts of taking some detail out of the bg so I blurred it a tad. I also made a pano version for Dale's idea. I also am uploading the version streight from the camera per Dale's request. Am anxious to her you thought...but be gentle lol #10003865

I think it would look pretty cool above a fireplace. I think I might do this with my grandchildren. It's a 16x30. It's a hard sell but there is the other option. #10004540
