Weathered Serenity

Description

Saturday, I had my first-ever visit to the actual rooftop of the cathedral's central bell tower--something I've wanted to see for 17 years!
The top 40' of the tower suffered so much damage in the 2011 earthquake, it is truly hard to grasp the scope without seeing it up close in person.
30 tons of carved limestone have been removed so far, and more remains to be pulled down. Still, not everything was destroyed, and this lovely
carved angel, protruding from one of the grand pinnacles, has survived with a smile! (One of her sisters didn't fare as well; see the Discussion
Thread for another, older angel, who lost her nose and chipped her shoulder; still better off than many carvings that were broken off completely.)

Another angel nearby, that suffered the indignity of a broken nose during the earthquake. #1456802

Thank you, folks! The amount of beautiful, detailed stone-carving like this, found all around the cathedral (inside and out) is truly astonishing! #10095007
