Lock on Main Danube Canal "Awaiting Green ligh
Uploaded: February 15, 2012 11:43:58
After 1,200 years a dream became reality on Sept 25th 1992 the Main-Danube-Canal was open for navigation and provided a link to the from the Rhine to the Main and Danube Rivers creating a new river linking the Black Sea in Romania to the North Sea in The Netherlands. This required 34 locks on the Main, 16 on the Main Danube Canal and 16 on the Danube. This lock just outside Nurnberg would give the maximum fall/rise of 81.01 feet.

I love a story behind the image, and this tells a wonderful tale of the canal and it's locks! I've been on the mighty Rhine, but not the Danube! #9993506

that is incredible. My brother was just talking about the Panama Canal yesterday. What a feat for these canals. Thanks for you series of photos. In another life I think you were a teacher. Images have rich color and detail, but my favorite part is the narrative. #10308665
