Aphid Farming II
Uploaded: April 23, 2010 20:00:43
4/23/10, macro. I posted another capture of this moment awhile ago. Not for the squeamish! Ants herd aphids for their honeydew and secrete hormones to prohibit aphid wing formation, or bite off the wings to prevent them from flying off. But aphids are protected from predators, like ladybugs, by the ants. (100mm 2.8f lens with 1.4X extension tube)

What seems especially telling in this photo is the behavior of the last aphid on the right FOLLOWING the ant. An amazing look at this farm, Carol, and beautiful work all around. #8570606

Carol- This goes beyound any description of what the macro world is all about. It is the reason I am saving my pennies, need lots of them, to buy a good quality macro lens. I can only hope that when I do get it, I can get even remotely close to a scene like this. This belongs in science books, it really should be published. It is astonishing the way you capture the action, that ant raised up is so symbolic of their world. This one will be in my favorites as I am so impressed with the quality and action of the shot. Added to that is the story of what the picture is all about. It is a fasinating read. A winner in every way.Carol L. Fowler April 28, 2010
Thanks everyone! I will be on the lookout for this scene again this summer. #8577235Rona L. Schwarz April 28, 2010
