1st Snow - Lonesome Lake

Uploaded: December 17, 2008 03:49:52

Description

I hunkered down under a bush alongside Lonesome Lake for about 3 hours, hoping the area's 1st snow storm would partially clear above the peaks of Franconia Ridge. It was very cold and windy, and the small bushes provided a little protection. I had hoped a moose would pass in front of me, but no luck. A break in the clouds lit up the range, and I was able to get off a couple of frames before the sun was lost. Windy conditions prevented the reflection I was looking for, but great light none the less. This shot came about an hour before sunset, but dark clouds blanketed the area by that time. The long wait was rewarded with a surprise sunset.

Harry
Think the wind that produced the ripples actually did you a favor as the ripples add another element to a WONDERFUL SHOT.

Those Moose never do quite what you hope for.

Happy Shooting& Merry Christmas

Thanks everone for the comments. Jack- There seems to be a fine line when wind ripples are cool and when they just get distracting. I think the ripples worked here because they were slow enough to keep some reflected sky in the image. I selected a fast enough shutter speed to keep the waves from blending and hold some detail in the near grasses. The oppisite technique can also work- a very long exposure and wripples blend for a very appealing colorful wash. #6902858

Just something to try w/calling the moose.
This was used by an OLD TIMER when I was up in Maine this past Oct, just prior to HUNTING SEASON.
Get the Super size coffee can drill a hole dead center in can bottom. Get a 18 inch shoe string pull thru hole and tie a knot on the inside. Dampen fingers and pull along the string while just holding the can by its rim.
Sounds TOOOOOO Simple but its a Cheap easy way to call in moose.

Happy Shooting
Jack

Excellent capture Harry. I agree with decision on fast shutter speed for this image. I think the ripples add interest and make this a better photo. Terrific patience paid off for you. #6909147
