Monumental Highway [Contest Winner Pool December 2008]

For Photogroup 101 Roads theme
Ayer's Rock (called Uluru by the aboriginal people who hold it sacred) is a huge monolith in the Australian desert. It is considered one of the natural wonders of the world. Though remote, tourists flock to visit it, especially at sunset as it changes color. Tour operators complained of the long drive around the rock to view the other side; so a tunnel was bored through this ancient rock. It opened in late 2006, but has seen little use because of the steep toll exacted to defray the expense.

Fascinating! Your image gives it such a surreal look and feeling, and your narrative is very enlightening! #6894101Dennis Workman December 15, 2008
great picture and story thanks Wally #6894132Wally Orlowsky December 15, 2008
Thank you, Joy, Colette, and Deb! Of course, it is obvious that the tunnel is fictitious. But everything else about this is real. Ayer's Rock is awesome and does change color dramatically as the sun sets. #6894137Susie Peek-Swint December 15, 2008

Wonderful capture of this icon, Wally. Very "out of this world!" I did not know that they did this to the natural wonder. SAd, isn't it? #6895199
