Great shot Jeff..I love how the bird is looking right into the lens....I think this may be better suited for vertical format...I would try 4x5 starting from the right upper corner and using the full height. Then clone out whatever is left of the small vertical branch.. #1241338Dale Hardin February 21, 2010
Wonderful capture Jeff and catching him looking at you is icing on the cake.Agree with Tony that a vertical format would work very well, and while you're at it give it a horizontal flip. You might try opening the shadows and toning down the whites just a hair also.
Where was this? It's rare to get this POV. #8404659

Thanks Tony and Dale. Here's the suggested crop. I like it. I decided to leave the branch in, I think it helps frame him. I also opened the shadows a bit and toned down the highlights and then used the burn tool on his head a little as well.
Dale - This was taken here locally. We spent some time yesterday shooting birds. We started out at Farmington Bay at the nature preserve. We saw lots of geese, a few blue herons, lots of hawks and only one bald eagle. As a last ditch effort to find some eagles, one of the guys took us to a place he had seen them before. We weren't disappointed, there were a total of 12, both mature and juvenile. It was fairly late in the morning, so they weren't too active, but it was fun to watch them. They were hanging out in the tops of the trees, 25-30 feet up. We were right below them. It was a fun day. #8404993

What a great shot, he is looking at you as if sizing you up for dinner. The edited one make this shot stand out even more. Also really like incoming. #8405112Dale Hardin February 21, 2010
I like the crop Jeff and I agree on the branch. I had thought the crop would only leave the tip of it, but there is enough that it makes a good frame.I don't have the lens or the speed of AF to get BIF shots so will enjoy yours instead. Looks like you had a great time. #8405406

all of these are really good I love when we are able to get shots like these. very nice job. I kind of lens were you using looking at the picture of samantha it looks like a 400 or 500 mm. where do you live Jeff are you still in utah. how exciting to be able to see the eagles like that. we had one nesting here in Oh couple of miles from here last year for the summer. #8405494Joan E. Hoffman February 22, 2010
The Eagle is WONDERFUL!I can't beleive that he is looking straight into the camera. Love the verticle crop especially. All the shots are very good. I am envious of the range of your lens. I managed to squeeze a 70-300 before I broke the photography budget completely (probably for years LOL!). #8407074Teresa H. Hunt February 22, 2010
These are all great shot's Jeff! I really love the eagle. He looks like he has some attitude. How fun to have shooting buddies. I need to find some. My family understands my obsession with photography, but they don't have the paitence to wait around while I take pictures. :) #8407403

Jeff, I totally agree with all four of Jeff's comments on this being a great series. You did a very nice job on the redo of the eagle. #8410499Jeff E Jensen February 23, 2010
Thanks all!Rita - I am in Utah. These were taken in 2 different places, Farmington Bay which is on the Great Salt Lake, and at a farmhouse in Centerville, not too far from the lake. Samantha was shooting the Canon 100-400 f/4.0 L lens. She had a lot of fun with it. Unfortunately, she didn't have her homework done before we went out, so she spent the rest of the weekend on homework and we haven't touched her files yet. I'm out of town for a week now, so it's gonna be a bit.
Joan - No reason to be envious of my lens, cause it wasn't my lens. All of the glass we shot with that day was compliments of my friend Dave.
Tony - So, I'm confused, do you like these or not? :o) I was drooling over these lenses as well. On my 40D, I was using a Canon 400mm f/4.0 DO lens with a Canon 1.4x teleconverter which gave me the 560mm reach. I was also carrying a 1Ds MkIII with a Canon 300mm f/2.8 L lens.

Referring to the original photo in the thread....I prefer the first version you posted. The main tree branch in the photo is an excellent leading line taking the viewers eye from the lower left on a diagonel to the eagle. The eagles head in this version is also in the upper right intersection of the rule of thirds lines. The flipped version creates some conflict with the eye with the empty blue space in the lower left. #8421341Dale Hardin February 28, 2010
That's a good point, Dennis. Even though I suggested the flip I must agree that the best of both worlds is the crop that his flipped versions uses coupled with the original orientation, would work the best. Good eye. #8421987Dale Hardin February 28, 2010
