Wonderful effects, light, and colors, Pom! Are you sure he wasn't Smokey taking a lunch break?

But he was so CUTE! You all seem so concerned! HA!

You know there is MORE to the story here of THIS PARTICULAR BEAR!

Wanna hear it?

(You guys are saying, "Uh oh. Here we go. Laura is going to tell us THE REST OF THE STORY!")

Well...as we drove down the highway that day we only knew there was a wild animal there because there were cars pulled over and camera's were OUT! (That's how it is in the the Rockies!)

So we pulled over. (My brother was really excited, let me tell you!)

All of us were quiet and respectful and used our zooms and kept a distance. I was 10 or so feet further back than it appears in this image!)

WELL- All of a sudden this IGNORANT MAN goes RUNNING up the side of the hill making loud noises and trying to get the bears attention, (hoping to get the bear to put his head up for a picture).

YOU JUST DONT DO THIS! They are WILD and DANGEROUS and YOU DON'T FRIGHTEN A BEAR! EVER! NO, NO, NO!

To say the very least it's disrespectful to instill "Fear of MAN" in them and to disturb their peace.

Everyone became appalled and the bear gets startled and starts to run off. The man is still yelling! The bear changes his mind, turns and runs towards the fence as the man who is also headed for the bear! (And I am right there! Being quiet)

I will tell you, that wired fence SURE FELT THIN at that moment!

ROAR! The bear says! "ROAR!", and backing up and away from the man, but still facing him at the fence, holding his ground!

We all were frightened! (Except the ignorant man). I slowly backed away shaking me head at this man for what he had done! EVERYONE seemed pretty upset. We One fellow called him a pretty bad name and we all went back to our vehicles leaving the bear alone.

The bear also felt he'd had enough and disappeared into the woods right behind him.

Everyone would have loved to have stayed and just waited for the right shot...

I have a shot of the bear as he approached the fence. (After he had first roared at the man). I was actually backing away at that point and started to head back down the hill.

Should I post it tonight?

Thank you all for dropping by!

-Laura

Wonderful find and capture, Laura! Amazing that you can get so close. Be careful, though, do not think that fence would stop them if they were hungry!!!! Lovely color. Thanks so much for the updates, too!!! #8389778

What an experience Laura, gosh some people can be SO stupid! Wonderful capture and effects!! #8389807

Ann Coates level-classic February 17, 2010

And you know what is sad about this story Laura, that if the man had somehow been attacked the bear would probably have been shot, through no fault of it's own. Some people have no idea and I'm glad you used some "harsh" words or word at him. Beautiful colours and effects here Laura. #8390129

Laura E. Swan level-classic February 17, 2010

Hi Ellen, Kerry and Ann!

I promise that I am careful, Ellen! :)

Yes, Kerry! I agree...

Ann, you are SO RIGHT. The bears DO get shot and it really REALLY upsets the PARK people and we locals that this is the law when it's the visitors that dont know how to behave. It's not right.

I wasn't the one to used the harsh words on him but I agreed in my heart with what I heard. It really upset everyone. Especially the bear.

Thanks you guys! All of you!

Beautiful work, Laura. What a capture!!! And what a bear story!!!

Aren't baby cubs cute as can be!!! Little teddy bears. I have seen one with Mama and Junior while looking out the window. Have been outside with bears a couple of times. Once hubby was coming to look for me, heard twigs cracking and headed that way; found the bear instead. I was several hundred yards away on a different path.

Another time I wanted to watch the sunset on Lake Huron and bounded down the steps to find myself about 30 feet from one who had his head tipped in our sunflower seed storage can. We don't keep that outside anymore. All I saw was this huge brown hind end. LOL The lid has a bear tooth mark in it now.

Hi Laura! What an awesome capture, and yes I would like to see the other shot!! What an amazing story. There always seems to be ONE in every crowd!! Some people just don't get it. He almost "got it" by the bear! That little fence would be a piece of cake to run through! You almost had a shot of a different kind! LOL!!!! Beautiful color and effects! WTG! Oh, btw....STAY SAFE! We dont want to see what it looks like from the INSIDE of the bear!! HA! Take care, Laura:) #8390634

Ooo! You guys! KNOCKED DOWN? SHOT? EATEN? How funny! And I thought you were a PEACE loving bunch! HAHAHAHAA!

Oh dear. Laughing here.

Well, my story stirred your hearts and this is good!

Yes, he WAS big. I should have shot this at worms eye view but this was actually taken before I knew what that meant! :D

Karen, I'll get the wire cutters and let this critter loose, since we all agree that wire is nice and thin. Should be easy!

He'll be down there by APRIL. Just in time to eat up those weeds of yours in your great state! :)

Laura Lee...I posted it! See gallery! And I promise to be careful. I hear the insides of bears don't smell pretty! If that is true then I sure dont want to go there!!! :) !!! HA!

Hi Laura, thanks for posting the second image! To see the two images side by side, sure tells a story. Talk about body language! LOL! Great work on both captures!!! WTG! Laura #8393279

Steve M. Harrington February 19, 2010

An interesting story, Laura. I have a good deal of experience with bears in the wild. Be careful, even when idiots are not around. That bear could have easily and quickly been over that fence if he wished. He can also outrun a race horse over short distances. Of course, like most wild animals he just wants to be left alone, but if you are going to speak to him, "Sir" would be a good idea. :) #8398863

Laura E. Swan level-classic February 19, 2010

Hi Laura Lee! You are welcome! Thanks for coming back to look!!! :D

Hi Steve. I know just what you mean. We are told those fences are safe but it's stands to reason that at full charge the animals could get beyond them. Respect is key. I agree totally and thank you for the visit!
