Aimee C. Eisaman January 20, 2010

Nice work with such low light conditions.....now I know nothing about painting, but to me it looks like he is just making a mess....what is it he was working on...any photos of the the final product? :~) #8315918

Jeff E Jensen January 20, 2010

Thanks Aimee. I went back through my files in the hopes of finding one with the finished product in it. No luck. I guess I'll have to go back. #8317498

Fantastic, yes the top one is awesome!! Well deserved EP!! #8323826

Jeff. You just know I like these images! A subject actually doing something rather than just staring at the camera. Now I shall wait for the first one to tell you the hands are blurred. Any one want to place bets?

I am curious about the title. Street artist?? Where was this Jeff? I am seeing shelves and lamps and all the paraphenalia that artists have in their studios. So is this something like an open-fronted store bordering the sidewalk?

Share with us the camera settings if you would be so kind. #8323894

Michael Kelly level-classic January 23, 2010

Peter you don't think the hands and arms are blurred? They are and very appropriately to the shot showing the action of the spray cans. Great shutter speed selection here. The first is the shot to I would choose also. Nice job on this action capture. #8323941

Thanks all!

Tony - these guys are really interesting to watch. The images that they can create with scraps of paper and spray paint are pretty amazing. Unfortunately, I didn't bother to get anything but tight shots like these, so I guess when we hold our first annual Phello's Phantastic Phun Philled Photo Phoray to Las Vegas, we'll have to go see these guys.

Thanks Laurence!

Peter - This is on Freemont Street in downtown Las Vegas. Freemont street is a pedestrian walkway and no longer open to vehicles. The first time I saw these guys was probably 7 years ago. At that time they had a much simpler setup - a piece of cardboard on the ground. They have gotten much more sophisticated with their setup. They happen to be out in front of a strip club. I realized several shots into things that right behind his right shoulder was a video screen advertising the club. I adjusted my angle for the rest of the shots, but I had to do some cloning on this one to keep it family friendly and eliminate the distractions in the background. :o)

As far as camera settings for the first image:

1/13 sec - f/8 - ISO 400 - 42mm

The second image:

1/10 sec - f/11 - ISO 400 - 51mm

Both were shot using a tripod.

Thanks Mike!

For those of you that have never experienced Freemont Street, the big attraction is the overhead LED video screen. Here's a couple of shots of it. #8324021

That looks like a fun place Jeff!! #8324129

Joan E. Hoffman January 23, 2010

We used to watch a guy in Progeso, Mexico, who had a small area along the sidewalk. He mostly specialized in landscapes on Satellite dishes, for all us Gringo's trying to hide their Canadian dishes LOL! They are really something to watch aren't they? I too prefer the first shot.... love the action! And... it has been many years since I last was on Fremont street... both of these images certainly capture the wonderful feel of the area! #8324134

Anthony L. Mancuso January 23, 2010

I was there a few years ago and it was fun, unfortunately I was not yet into photography so I din't get any good images like this, I love the bottom one.

I actually think they built this giant LED to attract people back to this part of town. For those who have never been, all of the newer hotels like New York New York and the Bellagio are a couple miles down the strip from Fremont St, which had its hayday up to the mid 80's I believe, as seen in the movie "Casino". #8324141

Peter W. Marks January 23, 2010

Thanks Jeff, lots of good info there. I appreciate it.
Mike, the very point I was making was that the hands are obviously blurred by the motion but I was teasingly (I thought) baiting someone to say "....but the hands are blurred!"
This shot has close similarities to the one I made of a potter at his kick-wheel where his foot is blurred as he propels the wheel around. #8324268

Jeff E Jensen January 23, 2010

I was thinking of that image when I posted this image and when I read your comments Peter. Funny stuff. #8324293

Michael Kelly level-classic January 23, 2010

Peter I know you were and I was teasing back. #8324564

Debbie E. Payne January 23, 2010

My favorites are the first and the last one. After I take a class in low-light photography, I will head to Vegas for some Phun! #8324659

Dale Hardin January 23, 2010

Jeff, you know I love ya man! But this shot just doesn't do it for me. I know, I know, all the selective blur to show the real thing and movement and all that, which I agree with in most cases, just isn't working here.

Let me count the ways. The title for starters, as noted, doesn't reflect what the subject it unless you are privy to the scene. Small point I know.

The shutter speed was a little off and too much blur, (like Peter's foot shot)showed more movement than selective blurring for effect. Even so, the shot may have worked if the rest of the shot had been in focus, but it is not. His head and face should have at least been sharper.

Also the background level is distracting and could be improved with an 8x10 crop starting in the lower left and then duplicate the shot and apply the soft light blend to darken the background and enhance the existing colors.

I agree that capturing the street scene is very artistic and "real" but every shot does not work just because it is "real". OK, OK, now I'm ready for all the feedback. LOL :o) #8324889

Peter W. Marks January 23, 2010

Oh, am I glad you are smiling in your avatar Mr Dale! lol Why does "incorrigible old rogue; cantankerous old geezer; 'ornery old bugger (reverting to English vernacular)" come to mind.
Sheesh! Just as well we love you Mr Dale #8324909

Jeff E Jensen January 23, 2010

Come on Dale, don't beat around the bush. Tell me how you really feel :o)

You know I wouldn't want you to be anything but honest. I appreciate your feedback.

I'm guessing that you are referring to the image I posted to the club which is the second image in this thread. If so, I agree that his head could be sharper. Unfortunately, there isn't much I can do about that, but I will play with your other suggestions.

As far as a title goes, I'm open to suggestions. #8325087

Jeff E Jensen January 23, 2010

Here's the 8x10 crop with the soft light blend. I also tries sharpening a bit, but it wasn't much help. #8325101

Debbie E. Payne January 24, 2010

A title....how about, "Doesn't Do It for Dave"?

Jeff, I can relate to your wanting to make SA #2 work because I will come home from places and have just a few of shots that I really wanted to get work that just didn't do so well. Sometimes, I can resurrect one, maybe two, but sadly, the next time I visit the folder I have become more objective and realize that getting rid of the so-so ones will make more room on my hard drive for the better ones that are yet to come around. #8325701

Dale Hardin January 24, 2010

LOL. Peter, you really crack me up!! :o) I literally laughed out loud when I read your response. Started my day with a smile.

Jeff, I agree that on many images, especially street scenes, we have very little creative control on their outcome. And if we were evaluating the shot solely on it's humanistic and urban relevance as a context, then my evaluation would be different.

But we are evaluating the image as a photographic rendition coupled with artistic interpretation. And for me, this particular shot wasn't making the grade so I was honestly puzzled by all the glowing accolades. Accolades that were certainly justified based on images that you have shown us in the past, but wasn't deserved, in my opinion, on this shot.

I have to go now. I just saw a kid walk by the house with a lollipop and I need to take it away from him before he drips slobber on my sidewalk. :o) #8326252
