During the early stages of life, newborn wolf spiders hitch a ride on their mother's abdomen. She will savagely protect her brood until they are ready to fend for themselves.

Though spiders tend to give most folks the heebie-jeebies, they are indeed quite fascinating creatures.
I was really fortunate to have noticed a slight movement among the leaf litter that day or I would have totally missed this rare opportunity to photograph a protective mom and her young.
