Under Cobwork Bridge

Uploaded: June 08, 2005 03:51:14

Description

The southernmost island of the Harpswell Peninsula is Bailey Island. The numerous coves and bays of the peninsula are commonly filled with anchored sailboats. Bailey Island is connected to Orr Island by the "Cobwork Bridge". The bridge was built in 1928 and constructed with granite blocks laid in such a way that it would not be washed out by intense incoming and outgoing tides. Amazingly, no cement was used in it's original construction. The bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. Thanks Kathleen for sharing this bridge with us on our Maine shootout!!
