Here's another from my collection. This one isn't quite as sharp as I'd like, but I really like the formation of the drop and the pillar.

The other 2 images are set-up shots. #1205992

Jeff looks pretty sharp to me and a great capture. I like the formation too. Very cool!

What exactly is the set up we are looking at? I recognize the bag to get the drop but is that a lighted screen as a backdrop and or light source. Please provide some detail as it looks like a neat way to go. #8137504

Hmm, I guess I'll start at the top and work my way down.

The drops are coming from a catheter bag that we wicked up at a medical supply place (yes, it is unused).

The bag is suspended from a chain strung between the 2 light fixtures - don't tell my wife.

The backdrop is actually a 13x19 print. We had several different versions that we used. My buddy created all of the in photoshop.

We used a black painter's tray to hold the water. The black tray made the surface of the water reflective which allows it to pick up the color of the background.

Light for the shots is provided by the strobes set up on either side of the water. They are both dialed up to +3. The card in front of each of them is to help limit the amount of light that hits the water directly.

The 2 strobes are set as slaves and are being controlled by a third and forth strobe on 2 of the 3 cameras. The third camera was able to control the strobes through the camera.

Once we had the setup dialed in, it was just a matter of timing.

I will give you one warning: THIS IS HIGHLY ADDICTIVE! We quickly killed 5 hours doing this Saturday afternoon. #8137531

You want the light to bounce off of the backdrop, it shouldn't hit the water directly. #8137535

You guys are too far out for me. I don't have a strobe and not the patience to set up procedures like this. Maybe when I get too old to go out on shoots and have to stay home, I might go for it. I like the results though. #8137695

I too like the formation here, but not liking the colors as much. Wow.....what a setup! Looks like fun, but alot of work too! Who are these other guys and how do you know them? Local photog club? Dale.....I don't think you will ever get too old to go out on shoots! :~) #8138441

The other guys are a couple of buddies of mine. There are four of us that get together to shoot. You may recognize them from some of my balloon shots from a few months ago. #8139664

OMG Jeff, way to complicated for me... but looks like you had FUN! Where's the beer and pizza... (or pizza and a "pil" (short for Pilsner) in Canada!)

Great shots BTW... love them, but liked the tones in your last one better.... however, anyone that goes to these lengths to set up a shot (if I put a candle in the scene, I am wiping my brow) deserves many credits! #8139870

how fun to have buddies that like to do the same thing and kill 5 hours. now could you go wrong with 5 great mind working together catheter bag and all.
I like this shot, but I think the red was more eye catching.

I am looking for a new tripod with a ball head. I'll take any recommendation my nikon D300 wt is 4lb #8139971

I agree on the colors. I also really like the tie dye versions as well. #8140517

Very cool Jeff. Thanks for sharing your set-up. How long did it take you to figure out the lighting? #8147798

Jeff E Jensen November 20, 2009

Thanks Teresa! We had actually tried for a bit using hot lights, then switched over to the strobes. We got much better results with the strobes. All together, we spent about 5-6 hours that day. Fun stuff. #8148358
