CONGRAT'S AUGUST WINNERS!! :o)

'Pirate Point', Stockton, near Newcastle Harbour entrance...

Captured very late afternoon in early autumn, on the 27th of March 2009...

"In November 1800, at Broken Bay (about 50 km [31 miles] north of Sydney), a gang of 15 convicts 'piratically seized' the sloop NORFOLK. Sailing northwards, NORFOLK was wrecked at the entrance to the Coal (or Hunter) River. Another boat was seized at Newcastle and the convict pirates resumed their bid to escape. Nine were captured: of these, two were hanged and the rest severely punished. The peninsula of land near the wreck of the NORFOLK was subsequently named Pirate Point. Between 1814 and 1849, at least seven other vessels were pirated from Newcastle.

NORFOLK - .11.1800; SPEEDWELL - 07.04.1814; Pilot Boat - 29.09.1815; A Boat - 13.06.1820; Commandant's Gig - 02.01.1825; ECLIPSE - 11.05.1825; GANNET - 1826; BROTHERS - 21.02.1849."
