It was a magnificent day...partly cloudy, dry, 75F degrees, light breezes. But shortly after my meadow trip, I relocated upriver about five miles, and crossed over to Lambertville, NJ. And there...Disaster Struck. See comments area for the story.

I had just dropped 8 quarters into a parking meter, set for two hours, strolling the streets of the quaint antique-dealers' mecca of Lambertville, NJ. First stop: The Lambertville Station--an old converted railroad station on the river, alongside the canal, with al fresco dining on the patio.

As I strolled on the old track, I lost my footing...I and my two cameras tumbled to a bouncing landing, in full view of all the happy diners.

Trying to save my cameras, I managed to rip my favorite light-weight shooting khakis, bloody my knee, elbow, hand, and who knows what else, while my 50D bounced on the pavement.

Perhaps the worse was hearing all the diners exclaim about my fall and having several rush out to help me off the track. Don't know which was worse...my embarrassment, my bloody parts, my torn pants, or the fact that the 50D had to be sent back to Canon for repairs...at least three weeks to come without my favorite camera.

HEAVING Sigh... Also wasted the quarters, since my broken heart and pride sent me home immediately. Another sigh.

Oh No Michelle, poor you, not sure which is worst either but all together makes for a pretty disasterous outing. Hope the pride is mended and the wounds healing - how will you manage 3 weeks without the d50 lol! That said the shot is stunning, fantastic clarity and details. #7828548

Girl, I can sure relate. I'm always falling down on our rocky beach..sometimes you are down so fast you almost don't have time to get the camera out of the way, which makes for a worse fall, since you have no hands left to catch yourself. So far, I haven't broken anything, but it's just a matter of time. #7828555

I too slipped with my camera and it landed flat on it's back and had to be sent back. It was back to me in almost a week. Actually just be happy you wasnt hurt our cameras can be replaced!!!

Certainly a day to remember!!! Well, the only good thing I can think off about this is that you still have lots of "bounce" in you ,Michelle,LOL!!! You description is very vivid & I bet you could have captured some great "pov" shots if your had time to shoot while you tumbled & bounced to the landing,LOL!!! LOL, LOL, and when you got home there was Ron winning about something. Sorry about the camera and all the injuries (pride)included. When we went on the three day trip couple of weeks ago, I was wanting to get a shot of a covered bridge, guess what, I went head first into the river, it was shallow enough that I could hold up the camera and save it. There were big rocks under the water that has a knee deposit on it.

Michelle - You take care of yourself! My last incident occurred in a marsh. I ended up knee deep in the muck and the only way to save the camera was to sit down. I was just lucky there was somebody there to help me get back up. I was a stinky mess but my camera was fine. The funny thing was that my wife barely commented on me coming home looking like I had been working in the sewer. She is used to me doing whatever it takes to get the shot. :-) - Mike

I was so confused when I saw your post on Deb's photo about missing your 50D I rushed to you Gallery to hear what happened. OMG Michelle I'm so glad you're OK. I keep telling myself I will risk no life or limb in my efforts to get the shot but sometimes....we just fall down with all that camera equipment in our hands. I'm so glad you're OK and like everyone says...the camera can be fixed and Canon is GREAT! You'll get it back before you know it.

Beautiful capture Michelle!! I couldn't even tell you how many times I've fallen over the years. To make you feel a little less embarresed I'll tell you my most humiliating fall story. I have a prosthetic left leg that doesn't always operate and lock the way it's supposed to, so I've turned falling into an artform where I twist around and immediately throw my hands in the air when I feel myself start to fall. I was shooting at a local trout stream (without a backup for a change) and was on a bank about 8 foot high bank. I slipped on an erroded area and my best friend tells me it was almost surreal as I reached down and proceded to calmly set the camera down at the top before cartwheeling down the bank into the freezing cold water. To make matters worse I was wearing shorts and my leg went flying into the river. I know there are a good 15 or so fisherman who will probably be telling that story forever. After the intial gasps all I could do was laugh. I wouldn't have minded a chance to see the whole ordeal from a less dizzying perspective. I'm good at saving cameras but hate having to take off my backpack off any time I want to change lenses and will balance 2-3 in my hands. I'm on my third 300mm lens in 2 years from bouncing them off the ground. Shelly is right though, there is always the temptation to get the best angles possible even if under any other circumstances it might seem like a really bad idea. A traumatic experience to say the least, but all is well now, we are grateful for that. I was once standing at the very edge (inches away) of a 300 foot precipice trying to compose a waterfall shot...and I am afraid of heights at that; my heart sank every time I looked down; then I backed off carefully, I figured it wasn't worth the risk, so settled for some cyclamen in the meadow behind me LoL! :) #7831560

I don't know you but your butterfly is great! Guess we all have "falling" stories. You have to learn to fall in snow like I did. At Tetons and stepped over small ditch in snow...ditch was bigger than I thought. I buried myself in snow with my two arms sticking up holding my cameras. THAT was the photo to get!

Even without the story, this is a dramatic image, Michelle -- the colours are wild! It's great to read you're doing better than your camera, but injured dignity doesn't heal as fast.

My fall was during a workshop, before sunrise on a stony beach, foolishly walking around with tripod legs extended. In the group was a trauma surgeon, so as I was falling, I imagined a speedy rescue for what was about to come. I yelled, and my knight in shining armour came crashing out of the woods, ran past me, and reported in a solicitous tone: "Kay, your camera's allright". Thanks bundles, Dr. John. #7834953
