Description

The Lost Gardens of Heligan, near Mevagissey in Cornwall, are one of The most popular botanical gardens in the UK. Originally the gardens were part of the estate owned by the Cornish Tremayne family. After the First World War, which led to the deaths of 16 out of the 22 gardeners, the gardens fell into a state of neglect until Tim Smit and a group of fellow enthusiasts decided to restore the garden to its former glory. The restoration, which was the subject of a six part Channel 4 television series in 1996, proved to be an outstanding success, not only revitalising the gardens but also the local economy around Heligan by providing employment.

Wonderful picture, it shows such history in the aged wood and structure. I think the way you photographed adds to the overall feel of the gardens. Thank you for also explaining what and where it was quite interesting. #1165689

I have just returned from our vacation just a couple of miles from Heligan and have a number of images of the old buildings here which I will post to my gallery when I find time.

Thank you so much Rita. Every year when we go 'home' to Cornwall we visit Heligan. There are literally hundreds of plants and trees including many sub-tropical ones all set in a steep sided valley which makes these gardens so very differant than many neatly trimmed public ones with straight rows of flowers and carefully pruned bushes. My particular interest is that in keeping with the history of the place there are many old buildings with old tools and impliments that are not carefully labled but just set down any old where just as they would have been a hundred years ago. Very much a working estate that stimulates the mind not a museum without a soul. #7831563
