man, I got to get going on the coffee shop filters. they are so nice. the chocolate was perfect for this little cutie. I really like it.

i'm not good with crops in general and for sure don't have a handle on cropping people pictures. I never know what you can/should clip and what you shouldn't. with that caveat, i'm wondering if you could give her just a snippet more on the top of her head. but you should wait to hear what the others say first. #1125314

Tony was it a problem with your computer? I still for the life of my can't download one of her storyboard actions because it says I need a password. I have all her other filters and they work fine. She said there is nothing wrong with the file and that it shouldn't need a password so I have just given up on it! So glad you got this one working though because It is a beautiful filter for portraits and I love it on this one! I agree with Sharon about the crop needing more room on the top if you have it...if not it's not a huge issue and actualy I would take more off the bottom. Would put it to where her shoulder actually is...not where the shirt says it is. She is a cutie! Love that smile! If you don't have room for the top then maybe a square crop would look nice here? As for tech issues....looks like your focus was off on this one. The only area I see in sharp focus is her sleeve and the DOF looks very shallow. Shallow is good for portraits, but too shallow causes problems with a pose like this. The look over the shoulder pose puts one eye back far enough that if you are using wide open or close to it you will have one eye in focus and one eye obviously out of focus. Have a few shots like this! I know you want to blur the background really good because with kids you have no idea where you will catch them in these cute poses. Just be careful! You can blur a background more in PS easily, but fixing DOF issues is alot harder! :~) #7501130

Anthony I think she is really cute and like the tones in the shot with the chocolate filter. To add any more I would be pretending to know more than I do about people shots. #7501334

Very nicely done, Anthony. She looks so 'timeless' here and you captured the smile so effortlessly. Lovely work.

Can someone tell me where to go to again to get the coffee filters. I remember when they were first mentioned but never moved that reference into my
tips file? Thanks! #7502445

Dale Hardin May 09, 2009

Tony, she is simply adorable. Great shot.

I'm a little surprised at the limited DOF at 4.6 at that distance. Not familiar with that lens so perhaps that is normal. I'm not very adept at technical lens issues.

Like your shot a lot so have nothing to offer except perhaps a crop to try. Would suggest cropping the bottom just enough to hide the seam at the top of the sleeve. #7502882

Thanks for the compliments guys, this is actually uncropped so no room to create space...Aimee, the problem I had downloading was that for some reason I only got one of two files required to run it, got the .png one but not the other one for some reason..took me awhile to figure that out and I got them both the second time I downloaded.

here is the link for coffeeshop Deb, compliments of Aimee

http://coffeeteaphotography.blogspot.com/2006/11/coffeeshop-tutorials.html

I think there shouldve been more DOF with those settings also, Dale and I'm not techie enough to say why there isn't either..I personally don't mind it though, I see here close eye, which is the major focal point, as being tack sharp and the other eye just slightly less so...i have read that as long as the eyes are in focus the other features of the face are secondary..i would have liked to get more DOF and will strive to next time, but I can live with this one as is. #7503025

Debbra Bailey May 09, 2009

Tony,

I love the filter! Will be going to that site :) Thank you for the info. again, and thank you Aimee!

I love the crop. I personally don't mind at all when the top of the head is clipped as long as it is clipped enough to look on purpose, as it does here :)

I see the dof issue, but for me, her left eye is sharp enough that it doesn't bother me her other one is softer... VERY CUTE shot! #7503030

happy birthday to the little cutie! this is a sweet shot and I wish I had more of these with my own monkeys but oh well. :-)

i did think it looked a little soft but it didn't seem to hurt it at all. despite all my time doing portraits, I don't have a ton of technical knowledge that I can put into words. still trying to work it all out.

love the coffee filters and now I will go and dream of the day when i'll be allowed to purchase something else to enhance my photography (PSE) but that's a long ways off :-( #7503254

Christie R. Bielss May 09, 2009

I agree with Debbra's comments. I like her eyes and the dof doesn't bother me. That is a bit weird to get that at f4.2, but then how far away were you standing from her when you took this? I like the filter on this and also have had problems downloading them and finally gave up. Will try again though - certainly seems worth the effort. Nice job Tony. She is a cutie - and 6 YO now......I would imagine daddy's getting his shotgun all polished and ready to sit by the front door! #7503452

Esther R. Tinz May 09, 2009

Love how the chocolate filter enhances an all ready good photo. I can't decide which crop I like best. They've both got their good points. Looks like you got a beautiful daughter and a winning photo. #7503810

Michael Kelly level-classic May 09, 2009

Anthony I prefer the first post. Not sure why exactly, but it is more appealing to me. #7503824

Aimee C. Eisaman May 09, 2009

I like the new crop! I'm not saying the DOF really created an issue here with me, but just pointing it out because it can be a problem with this type of shot! #7503965

Anthony L. Mancuso May 09, 2009

Thanks for the great thread everybody...i think I'm gonna take Mikes side with the crop, I think the original is more flattering for some reason..

Thanks Kathe but I already entered for today , I wanted to make sure I got all the feeback on this one, but I will certainly enter it tomorrow..

And yes Christie and Ellen I will have ol blue at the ready when I need er..she's out back behind the outhouse next to the moonshine still...

Thanks for clarifying Aimee...unfortunately I have also ran into this problem before, I find it to be one of the drawbacks of shooting in soft natural light..sacrificing wider DOF using a larger aperture to keep shutter speed and ISO reasonable, I was fortunate on this one to get her eye in focus.. #7504027

Jeanine M. Bailey May 09, 2009

Hey! I've been out and about all day and missed the action here!! BEAUTIFUL little girl and portrait!! I LOVE the tones of the filter! Hope she had a wonderful birthday!!! :) #7504140

Sharon Lohrmann May 09, 2009

tony I like the orginal crop as well. I think the elongation is flattering. she feels a bit stumped in the second one.
