Easter Lily

Description

Not sure about the crop here or the brightness of the petals. Can't seem to get this without a bit of blown out spots. Ideas?

Christie this is beautiful! White flowers are so difficult, but I think you did a fantastic job with the exposure on this one. I'm far from understanding the ins and outs of exposure so I can't even begin to offer advice on how to get this with zero blown out areas. Personaly though I am not overly bothered with what you have here. The blown out areas seem natural due to the gradual change in lighting on the petals. Curious to see if anyone with more knowledge can shed some light on this! :~) I'm currently trying to read the BP guide to exposure. Not getting very far with having to stop every paragraph for "I want milk" "Elam Stinks" "Waaaaaaa" "He's touching me" LOL! Gotta love the little beasties! :P

Other suggestions for this shot....I would remove that green on the left.....just doesn't fit. I like your almost to the edge composition for all the petals, but do remember this may cause an issue in printing. Also a frame would cover that up too! If you don't have anymore room to work with and want to frame this you could increase your canvas to create a matted look for framing. Just some thoughts! :~) #1113095

Really an excellent job on this Christie. Love the square crop, but, as Aimee stated, printing will be a problem. I wish photo shops would do a square, because it really enhances some shots! #7400508

Aimee C. Eisaman April 13, 2009

Ritz does sqaure crops and I can bet the that place Jodi uses online does square ones. There must be a place up there that does square! :~) #7400630

Dale Hardin April 13, 2009

Lovely shot Christie. Excellent exposure and nice crop. Agree with Aimee on the green bit on the left but otherwise a nice keeper. #7400774

Jeanine M. Bailey April 13, 2009

I like what you have here Christie!!! :) White flowers always get the better of me!!!! :) I'm liking the square too!!! :)

Deb and I use photopipe.com to print and they have square along with every size imaginable under the sun!!! :) #7400798

Thanks! I haven't really checked up here because just assumed that they are set up for all the standard sized. I will find out, and if not will try your suggestions!!!!! #7401178

Cristie, not much to add here I agree, beautiful shot. I like the detail in the flowers center (pistol stamens whatever - was never good at biology) and I echo the comments and suggestions already made. #7401200

Lovely floral here Christie..i am not so much bothered by the blown out areas on the petals as I am by the blown out area on the three sided white structure in the middle of the flower (excuse my floral anatomy terminology ignorance) since that is the main focal point..perhaps you could tone that down using selective levels or other lighting adjustment. #7401204

This is beautiful and well done.

I agree with Aimee and Dale about the green on the left, and I never would have noticed the three sided white thing (I am flower challenged) until Tony said something.

a beautiful lily. did you use any filters to bump up the colors? there's something not quite realistic to it that I like.

and yep- smugmug has several sizes for square prints #7401788

Sharon Lohrmann April 13, 2009

christie - easter lilly's are one of my favorites - they smell so good. this one looks beautiful. I think the phellos have already covered the suggestions.

the tips on different printers was helpful in this thread

for those interested...the provocative discussion of plant anatomy can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stamen

apparently the three sided white thing is a stigma.... #7401921

This has an Artsy feel to it. Like Jodi said - it doesn't seem real - I think its something about the texture - and yet its appealing. Good Job.

Once you do get a 5 x 5 printed then you have to find a 5 x 5 frame in the store. Hard to come by. Thanks Jeanine
for telling us about photopipe.com. Will have to check it out.

i have been wondering about all this talk of atypical sized prints..if the frames for them are as easy to come by.. #7402558

Aimee C. Eisaman April 14, 2009

You can always go the route of custom framing, but many odd sized frames can be found on Ebay. #7403580

Christie R. Bielss April 14, 2009

Thanks everyone! I wasn't sure about this one, but now I guess I am! LOL!

Hobby Lobby and Michael's carry a lot of "odd"-shaped frames in the framing area. They can also make a frame and/or mat whatever size you need - and if you check the internet specials prior to going, you can generally print off a coupon for 40-75% their framing services. #7403969

Jodi M. Walsh April 14, 2009

i've found square frames at both Michaels and Target (even with plain white mats) #7404617

Esther R. Tinz April 14, 2009

Thanks for info on frames. I've gone to Target, Kohls and JoAnn Fabrics. I've got one frame so far. Never thought of checking out Ebay. :) #7404682

Joan E. Hoffman April 14, 2009

Couldn't you frame a sq 5" print in a self cut mat in a 8 X 10 frame... or would that just look weird? #7405897

Aimee C. Eisaman April 14, 2009

I think that would look fine as long as you had a title plate or something like that to fill the space! #7405898

Meghan Gonski April 14, 2009

I haven't read any of the above comments but I like it. IT's perfect for Easter. :) But since you said it is a crop, I wouldl give more breathing room around the edges. The petals are too close to the edge for me. #7406119

Christie R. Bielss April 15, 2009

You know, come to think of it, I've seen a lot of "artsy" prints where the print is a 5" square but there was tons of white matted space with a plain black frame. It actually looked pretty cool. I've got a number of prints like this that I'd like to frame but didn't like it in a big version. This could be a terrific alternative! Great idea! #7406616

Vicki Snow April 15, 2009

What a beautiful image....the clarity is just spectacular....I like the bg works well with the white. The green leaves compliments the green center. I see no blown out ares on my screen...just a beautiful image that would make a beautiful greeting card...nicely done!! #7407615
