The Mojave Desert - Edwards AFB California; November 1985. In the early morning hours NASA's Boeing 747 slowly carries the Space Shuttle Challenger piggyback on her way to Runway 22. She was leaving on a cross country trek to Florida to prepare for the next mission. Little did I know, when I was photographing her, this would be the last time that she would be here - Challenger was lost during the next launch from The Cape in Florida in January 1986...
Scanned the negative, adjustments made with PSE7 and converted to B&W with NIK Silver Efex (MT)

My feelings mirror the rest here, Jeff! When this happened I was working for the airlines in California. Our entire shift crew was watching that day on the TV monitors. We were all so excited...About 75 of us. A pin could have dropped as we watched her launch and then go up, up, up, then the spiraling. We had huge group gasping's and then silence. Shock. Disbelief as we all watched together. Tears came to many and soon we all became shocked zombies. Moving about, trying to work,....but couldn't. It was very hard to function after that for several days.
Wow. Thanks for bringing the memory back to me. She and her crew and the brave adventurous teacher aboard should never be forgotten.
