Thanks to everyone for the comments. This is one of my favourite places for contemplation and cobweb-blowing splendour. It's also one of my favourite photos because it evokes so much emotion and thought for me.

That's such a perfect shot. Did you scan it from a B&W print. Those mid-tones are such a match to the paper that I used in HS. I always dreamed of getting that "silverness" to the clouds, and middle hills.
And that reflection. It's perfect.

Thanks all! I'd been scrutinising the work of Ansel Adams to try to learn from his expert handling of tones. I worked carefully with this shot using a monochrome Gradient Map adjustment layer in Photoshop (as well as a little dodge & burn). This enabled me to observe the image histogram and adjust tthe mid tones to a fine degree, while ensuring the tonal range was total.

It was a very useful learning curve, since digital shots can sometimes lose that 'silver' quality you mention Robert.
