Sailor's Delight

Uploaded: November 20, 2008

Description

Is the old adage “Red sky at night, sailor’s delight? Red sky in morning, sailor’s warning” true, or is it just an old wives’ tale?

Well if it is…then sailors on our street would delighted, as I took this picture 2 nights ago from my front porch. No color enhancement only a slight crop and some sharpening; I ran outside so fast I didn’t have time to mount the camera to the tripod.

That is an extraordinary photo. I absolutly love the the colors.

FYI...That saying dates back past Jesus's time. In Matthew 16:1-4, Jesus made fun of the Pharisees and the Sadduesees because they ask for a sign from Heaven and He said,"you know how to interpret the apperance of the sky, but you can not interpret the signs of the times?" And then He walked away. I can see him rolling his eyes and chuckling.

Anyways, beatiful picture. #6779795

Melissa. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
Air Resources Laboratory Surface Radiation Research Branch (and who is going to argue with an agency with a title like that!) there is some scientific fact attached to the "Sailors warning" saying. Something to do with high and low pressure fronts. Having been born and raised near the ocean it is a saying that we often quoted when planning a fishing or sailing trip. There is another version used by farmers that substitutes "shepherd" for "sailor".
This is a very interesting image of cloud formations Melissa and is so much more than just a pretty color. These are alto-cumulus clouds which form at anywhere between 6,000 and 20,000 ft.
