Of course, now I've lost your comments, but I definitely can see a difference between this one and the first one; for the better. Appreciate the help guys! #1033715

OH, DEBBIE!!! This is absolutely GORGEOUS! What lens and settings did you use to get such clarity? #6744440

Jodi M. Walsh November 12, 2008

you got it debbie!great job #6744585

Debbie E. Payne November 12, 2008

Thank you all for commenting on this one. The crop is slightly different from the first version as there was too much negative green space above his head. I tried this time around to place his eyes in the top left intersection of thirds - or at least close to that spot. I also selectively lighted up his eye and the tiny bit of blue under his beak that was in shadow. Finally,I did two passes at noise reduction as UV suggested. I'm quite pleased with it, too.

Vicki -- I am not sure which lense this was but because of the totally soft green background, I am going to guess that this was taken with my 70-300 zoom, but it could be one of my other ones. Typically, at the zoo I use my 17-85 but I don't think that lens would give me this DOF. I'll check the metadata when I get home. #6744879

Vicki L. Filippin November 12, 2008

OK. I would be interested to know as I have done those indoor shots at the zoo also. Unless you used a really high ISO, I can't see getting such great clarity with the 70-300. I borrowed one of those for a few months and although the zoom was awesome, I found it to lack in clarity and didn't work well in low-light situations. #6744901

Debbie E. Payne November 13, 2008

Thank you Dale, Corinne and Kay. I really love the lorikeets at the zoo and because you get to go into their cage and take pictures up close and without bars, it is a very satisfying zoo portrait experience. Glad you like this little guy. He truly was this colorful! #6751033

Thank you UV. I just love the lorikeets and never miss the opportunity to photograph birds so closely.

And Sonya - get ready for a real treat. BP is the absolute best place to learn about what makes a good photograph. Just do what you are doing by visiting lots and lots of galleries and notice what the judges look for. I will be going through your gallery when things slow down around here (Just got back from Florida and work is a Zoo right now; not the kind of zoo I like to frequent! I appreciate your kind words. #6836225

I want to thank all of you for taking the time to send congratulations.

Not being home this Christmas, I get only so much time, "online" so I haven't gotten around to finding out who all got finalists just yet. Hopefully, I'll have time to go through them tomorow! #6930697

Debbie E. Payne March 16, 2009

All of you, thank you for commenting on this little guy. I must have had a few really busy days at work to miss all your Congrats. BTW, I think maybe I was in Long Beach, CA around that time and most likely came back with little time for BP after the trip. I appreciate your taking the time to comment. There were lorikeets in Long Beach, too and it was a good thing I came away with a few good shots because I paid for it in bird droppings. Next time I'm taking along at least a baseball cap. #7293047

I AM SO GLAD that I am NOT the only one who has had this happen to them! It was getting lonely!

Once a seagull got me BIG TIME on the HOT the beaches of Southern California...(You don't EVER want this to happen! It's oily and horrible!)and then an OWL of all things got me as I was having a picnic under a tree minding my own business. HA!

I also get fortune cookies with no fortunes in them but let's not go there!

My life line on my hand is nice and long so I'm going with THAT! ... (Hummm...on second thought... does this mean I will have a very long fortune-less life???) Whaaaaaaa!

:)

Smiles to you and on your fun story! -Laura #7293445
