Iceberg Lips
Uploaded: January 25, 2005 12:08:04
Close up of a very blue section of an iceberg that looked to me like iceberg "lips". An explanation of the blue color and another example are in the discussion. The "greener" water around the berg is the actual water color over the submerged portion.
Sigma 70-300@170mm; polarizing filter; f6.3@1/640 sec. Cropped and very minor adjustments in PSP8.

The darker blue areas in this iceberg and the one in the second picture are related to the age of the ice and the conditions under which it formed. Icebergs usually break off from glaciers, which are formed by compressing fallen snow (over thousands of years in most cases). Like the snow it is made from, the younger ice contains lots of trapped air. This results in many reflective surfaces, so all the wavelengths of sunlight are reflected, producing the traditional white color. But, the older ice is compressed by the weight of the tons of snow above it. The air is squeezed out and the ice is crystal clear for as much as several hundred feet. As light passes through this ice (and also through any deep water), more wavelengths (colors) are absorbed until only the shortest waves (blues) are left to find a reflective surface. This is the same principle that makes the sky blue. In many icebergs the dark blues are only revealed in deep cracks. But, on rare occasions the newer ice has metled away to reveal the blue core and the entire iceberg is a stunning blue (we saw none of these). Sometimes the smoothed shapes are the result of the iceberg flipping over so that the "bottom" that has been worn by the water is exposed. Technically, these two examples may not quite be big enough to icebergs, but are called "growlers". #208731Paul Michko January 25, 2005 0

I'm with Bonnie I'm enjoying this trip. Your images make me feel like I was right there. This one just emits cold. Love the blue color in the iceberg and the "green" color of the water especially against the pieces of "gray" water we can see. Very well done Wally!! Thanks for the iceberg lesson as well!! #1061886Judith G. Secco January 25, 2005 0
