The Roof

Description

Mt. Everest is the highest point on this global village of ours. Mountaineers from around the world dream of standing on its summit. I had the good fortune of meeting Tenzing Norgay, the first to reach the top with Sir Edmund Hillary in 1953. (MT)

Thank you all so much! This image was taken on a flight out of Kathmandu. Everest is hidden behind Nuptse and Lohtse that are a part of the massif.
Here is a picture of Tenzing and I in a remote airport in the jungle area of Nepal. He was a true hero and gentleman.

This is great, Steve!!! I'll bet it was an honor to meet Tenzing Norgay. Especially, if you are a climber. From what I have read, the Sherpas are an amazing people. I hope their livelihood wasn't too impacted by the Chinese closing Everest to climbers for the Olympics!! #6423380

Steve M. Harrington September 07, 2008

I was thrilled to meet Tenzing. We chatted for about half an hour. There were all kinds of questions I wanted to ask, but didn't. Instead, we just enjoyed each other's company. He was a charming and humble man.
It was the same when I met Mother Theresa. I was most interested in simply getting a "feel" for these larger than life figures.
They were moments I will forever cherish.

Well, I am terribly ashamed of myself Professor! HOW in the world this 'beauty' escaped me I will never know! It is a breath-taking, spectacular scene and your effects just polished it right up to perfection! I love the depth and textures of the clouds!

What an honor it was to meet Tenzing AND Mother Theresa! I know what you mean about just wanting to take in their presence even when filled with so many questions! There are unique and special people out there like that. You just enjoy being near them. What special memories you will always have!

Again, spectacular and a heartfelt congratulations! I do hope to see this go on to winner! You should have had a few more finalists as far as I am concerned! #6490942
