Thank you, Nobi!!!The reason cowbirds are such a problem in the US right now is all the clearing of forests. Cowbirds are edge birds, they like to live where meadows meet forest. They used to be mostly east coast birds and the other species there have tricks to avoid being parasitized by cowbirds. They will recognize and remove the cowbird eggs, for example. The west coast birds, like this vireo, have no defenses because cowbirds only recently came to those areas as people began to clear away the forests and create more and more edge habitat. I don't mind nature's processes in general, and wouldn't be to upset to see a cowbird in the nest of a bird that knew how to deal with it, but this was indirectly caused by humans and the vireo has no defense.
